Often in Australia, strata law reform gets on a merry-go-round, where just after one state reviews and changes its strata laws, another state kicks off their own review that picks up the parcel and changes theirs too.
This time it’s Victoria’s turn.
Consumer Affairs Minister, Nick Staikos, has announced an independent expert panel review headed by Marsha Thomson [a former Minister] of the Owners Corporation Act 2006, with a focus on:
Hardship issues when strata owners have trouble paying strata levies.
Conduct of strata managers, including dishonesty, unfair contracts, conflicts of interest, commissions and kickbacks.
The collective sale of strata buildings without unanimous agreement.
The short term accommodation controls introduced in 2019.
The review is planned to finish and report by December 2025.
