It looks like the ACT is trying to outdo NSW’s Building Commissioner with new proposals to regulate #stratatitle property development including a few radical ideas in the Property Developers Bill 2023.
Here’s a sample of the new controls.
Property developers will be licensed [an Australian first].
Developers and builders will have 10-year building defects liability.
A reverse onus for defects in the first 2 years, so that developers and builders must prove a fault is not a defect.
New government regulatory powers over defects, developers and builders.
The @CanberraTimes reports that the Sustainable Building and Construction Minister, Rebecca Vassarotti, says the government is responding to ongoing complaints about building quality and a lack of accountability, particularly in the booming apartments sector.
I’m very interested in seeing these reforms in action from next year.
