There are 3 new proposed laws that could really change how construction is regulated in NSW with big impacts on #stratatitle development and repairs and maintenance.
The Building Bill 2022 replaces the Home Building Act 1989 and regulates all building work in NSW (residential and commercial), including licensing of practitioners and consumer protection.
The Building Compliance and Enforcement Bill 2022 replaces the Residential Apartment Buildings (Compliance and Enforcement Powers) Act 2020 and expands compliance and enforcement powers.
The Building and Construction Legislation Amendment Bill 2022, and the Building and Construction Legislation Amendment Regulation 2022 will amend other existing laws governing the building and construction industry.
The changes will happen in stages.
Firstly, in the residential building sector.
Then, in the commercial sector, proposing to regulate for the first time, builders and designers undertaking commercial construction.
Finally, with a new licensing scheme, expanding the Building Commissioner’s powers, strengthening consumer protections, and making everyone in the supply chain responsible for their work (including suppliers of building products).
It sounds like positive steps that can’t happen soon enough.
