It’s looking like ABC Media is being given ‘free shots’ at the strata sector when they can report on basic strata operational issues with horror stories of strata owner and resident experiences.
In this ABC News article by Patrick Bell called Strata Managers Come Under the Spotlight as Apartment Living Becomes More Popular, he tells a very familiar story of unaddressed building problems causing water flooding into apartments, poor [or non existent communication, and poor or non-existent record keeping.
Now, I’m sure that there’s a range of good [or at least semi legitimate] reasons why the problems exist, continue and are taking time to resolve. I’ve heard them all and you know them.
But, isn’t the more important point this article highlights that the basics of strata building management are not being handled at a minimum satisfactory level?
Basic strata things like:
Ensuring the strata lots are habitable.
Telling strata owners and residents what’s going on [or not going on, and why].
Keeping and making available complete records.
Clarifying roles, responsibilities and expectations.
So, it strikes me that perhaps strata buildings, committees and managers need to go back to the basics and get them done more often, better and faster.
I dare say, that would make strata citizens a lot happier.
Plus, it would make it a bit harder for ABC News to strata bash with impunity.

"He said the SCA welcomed the opportunity for a third party to provide guidance on what strata managers were and were not responsible for."
