Even more complaints about NSW strata title … and, by a lot of strata commentators
If you wanted to feel worse [or maybe better] about strata title read this @SMH article by @CaitlinFitzsimmons that covers a litany of sad NSW strata stories.
It’s a bit of hodge podge of strata complaints by leading commentators including things like these.
A strata owner's 10 year [and continuing] wait to get water leaks from his balcony fixed.
The 2018 Opal Tower evacuation for strata defects.
Professor Cathy Sherry saying NSW strata law 'is a dogs breakfast’, too long and complex, and not suitable for small strata schemes.
The lack of strata owner participation in decision making.
Experts [unnamed] saying that strata laws are not fit for purpose and that the government underestimates strata.
NSW SCA President, @StephenBrell describing the NSW strata laws are ‘antiquated’.
The disproportionate representation of strata owners [at 18%] in NSW bankruptcies for overdue strata levies, interest and recovery costs.
NSW Strata Commissioner @JohnMinns identifying water entry as one of most common strata building issues.
Strata buildings [and owners] deferring essential maintenance to keep strata levies lower.
Increasing insurance premiums and increasing difficulties securing insurance
OCN Executive Officer @Karen Stiles accusing the NSW Government of ‘not supporting it [strata] in any way’
The Mascot Towers dilemmas since 2018 and continuing.
NCAT appointed strata managers abusing their ultimate powers.
Strata Lawyer @AmandaFarmer saying that ‘it's too late for most strata owners’ in older strata buildings in disrepair.
Costly, time consuming and unsatisfactory dispute resolution at NCAT and otherwise.
Smoke drift issues and their impacts on other residents.
Hmmm. That’s a long list of serious issues, it’s pretty accurate, and there’s plenty more.
So, I’d have to agree with the article’s closing comment that the new NSW Strata Commissioner, @JohnMinns 'has a big job ahead of him’.
