There’s breaking news in NSW from Your Strata Property that there’s a crisis in strata committees, according to its survey and May 2025 report, The Strata Committee Crisis.
In March 2025, 745 anonymous strata citizens from various backgrounds participated in the YSP online survey, responding to questions on 8 key areas.
The report outlines 5 key insights and actions from their answers covering:
Develop Accredited Training Programs Led by Strata Experts
Secure Sustainable Funding Through Owners Corporations
Introduce a Mandatory Induction for All New Committee Members
Offer Flexible, Ongoing Learning Formats
Recognise and Reward Participation
And leading Amanda Farmer to conclude that that strata committee members and strata owners ‘are calling out for help’ and ‘want clearer guidance, stronger skills, and independent education delivered by professionals who understand strata from the inside out’.
Those conclusions are hard to argue with and probably true, but also convenient outcomes for a strata information business from a sample of 0.0005% of NSW strata owners and residents [745 of 1,423,165].
However, my key takeaways from the published survey results are as follows.
First, that there’s some very polarised views about what strata citizens think they know about strata title; with 70% saying that they had very little or no confidence in their knowledge and the other 30% saying they were ‘very knowledgeable’ which suggests, that both groups are wrong and probably know more [and less] than they think.
Second, that a significant minority [33%] want strata committee training to be provided by the government, suggesting they want training to operate like a kind of ‘sanctioned’ strata correctness when the reality is like the Aristotelian adage explains: ‘the more you know, the more you realise you don’t know’.
Third, no one wants to pay for strata committee training, with 86% wanting either strata buildings or the government to pay rather than the committee members, which suggests that it’s hard to see how it can ever be financially viable to train strata committees and strata owners.
